A 26-inch path, up to 20 inches deep

The clearing width the listing states, with a 20-inch intake. On our planner's maths (4 inches of overlap per pass), a 20-foot-wide two-car drive is 11 passes at this width, and a 4-foot sidewalk 3. It throws up to 45 feet, per the listing, which is a fluffy-snow number.

Why it made our list

What changes on a storm morning

20" intake height. How tall the snow can stand before you take it in two bites. At 20 inches and up, the housing takes a deep overnight dump and a good part of the plough ridge in one go.

Heated grips. Warm hands on the handlebar, which is the difference between a pleasant half hour and counting the passes on a minus-10 morning.

Two-car drive or a long country lane?

Two-car drive: at 26 inches it's 11 passes on a 20-foot-wide drive, on our planner's maths. The 20-inch intake takes a normal overnight dump in one bite; the plough ridge, top first. Electric start, per the listing, so the 6 a.m. part is a button.

Long country lane: a 12-foot lane is 7 passes, so a 200-foot lane means about 1,400 feet of walking behind it. The drive does the pulling, per the listing. Up to 45 feet of throw keeps the banks from creeping in by February.

Great for you if…

  • Your hands are the first thing to give up in the cold
  • You dread yanking a pull cord at 6 a.m. in January
  • You'd rather steer a machine than push one
  • You trust a long track record: 706 buyer reviews

Skip it if…

  • You simply want our top pick: that's the EGO SNT2400 24" Two-Stage, Bare Tool (9.3/10)
  • You want no gas can, no oil changes and no fumes in the garage: this one runs on gas

What PowerSmart promises

The seller states, word for word, in the PowerSmart 26" 208cc B&S, Handle Warmer listing:

  • Powerful 208cc Briggs & Stratton 950 snow series engine delivers 2700 lbs/min snow plowing capacity.
  • Quickly and easily cut through icy snow with variable speed control, forward and reverse.
  • All-steel auger easily cuts through tough icy snow, and the high-speed steel impeller throws snow 45 ft away.
  • 26 in. clearing width and 20 in. intake height, one-hand 180° chute control, adjustable steel skid shoes help protect surfaces from scratches and scuffing.

That's the seller talking, not us. How it copes with the plough ridge at 6 a.m. isn't something a bullet point can tell you.

Our take

The verdict

Our favourite thing about the PowerSmart 26" 208cc B&S, Handle Warmer is 26 inches of snow per pass, closely followed by 20 inches of intake height. 706 buyers back that up with 4.5/5, about as reassuring as a review record gets. Honestly, the catch: no word on the warranty. We'd pick it if your hands are the first thing to give up in the cold; otherwise, put it next to the EGO SNT2400 24" Two-Stage, Bare Tool first.

Living with it

Delivery day

Check the listing for what you have to put together before the first start. Fill it with fresh gas and check the oil before you need it.

The first storm

Turn the key or press the button. At 26 inches a pass, a 20-foot drive is 11 passes. Switch the grips on before you leave the garage.

Mid-winter

Keep a few spare shear pins on the shelf, and clear a clogged chute with a stick, never your hand. Our safety guide explains why.

Putting it away

Stabilize the fuel or run it dry, as the manual says, and change the oil. Our summer storage guide has the April checklist.

What buyers say

Buyers give it 4.5/5, a strong record, slightly below this ranking's 4.6 average. And with 706 reviews behind it, that number is hard to argue with.

The one thing we'd check first

Before the PowerSmart 26" 208cc B&S, Handle Warmer goes in your cart, check your driveway width: at 26 inches a pass, a 20-foot drive takes 11 passes on our planner's maths.

Before you buy

Your driveway

Pace out the width and the length (one stride is roughly three feet) and type them into our clearing-width planner. It compares the size classes for you.

Gravel or paved

The skid shoes adjust, per the listing. On gravel, the housing has to ride high enough not to pick up stones. Our gravel vs paved guide shows the setting.

Fuel, oil and storage

Fresh gas, the oil grade in the manual and a stabilizer for the off-season. Our oil guide and summer storage guide cover both.

The first start

Do it in November, not in the first storm. Our starting guide lists what to check.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PowerSmart 26" 208cc B&S, Handle Warmer any good?

We rate it 8.9/10 (very good), #2 of 5 in our 24–26 inch two-stage snow blower ranking. It is based on 706 buyer reviews averaging 4.5/5 and the specifications stated in the listing.

How wide does the PowerSmart 26" 208cc B&S, Handle Warmer clear, and how far does it throw?

The listing states a 26 in clearing width and a throw of up to 45 ft for a two-stage machine. Those are the seller's best-case numbers: wet, heavy snow and the packed ridge the plough leaves both cut the throw short. Our clearing-width planner counts how many passes your driveway takes at that width.

What does a gas snow blower like the PowerSmart 26" 208cc B&S, Handle Warmer need?

Fresh fuel (with a stabilizer if it sits for weeks), the engine oil grade its manual names, a couple of spare shear pins and a dry corner of the garage. Fuel it and start it outdoors only: the exhaust carries carbon monoxide.

What do you get with the PowerSmart 26" 208cc B&S, Handle Warmer?

Its listing states a 26-inch clearing path, a 20-inch intake, heated grips, a throw of up to 45 feet, a 208cc Briggs & Stratton engine and electric start. These are the seller's figures, not our measurements: how it copes with your snow, your surface and the plough ridge can't be read from a listing.

What should I check before ordering the PowerSmart 26" 208cc B&S, Handle Warmer?

Your driveway: pace out the width and the length (one stride is roughly three feet) and type them into our clearing-width planner. It compares the size classes for you. Gravel or paved: the skid shoes adjust, per the listing. On gravel, the housing has to ride high enough not to pick up stones. Our gravel vs paved guide shows the setting. Fuel, oil and storage: fresh gas, the oil grade in the manual and a stabilizer for the off-season. Our oil guide and summer storage guide cover both. The first start: do it in November, not in the first storm. Our starting guide lists what to check.

Where can I buy the PowerSmart 26" 208cc B&S, Handle Warmer?
